The curled fist pounded on the Jeep’s steering wheel with blow after blow like a hammer. Despite the rage, he’d been cognizant enough to use the fleshy part of his palm and not his knuckles. A broken hand now would be very inconvenient, and not to mention a big waste of time. There’d be the doctor visit, the splint, the questions. He’d have a little soreness tomorrow perhaps. That was okay; the temporarily numb hand would remind him of what he’d wanted to do. Needed to do.

Teach that bitch a lesson or two. Maybe have a little fun at her expense, like she’d done to him. How humiliated he’d been, coming home to a note of all things. She didn’t even have the decency to break it off in person, the coward. Hell, she’d probably been seeing this guy for a while now, maybe even texting him from Chicago. Why else had she moved to this rat-hole town? Certainly not for the nightlife. And she’d sure shacked up with the nerd quickly, hadn’t she?

Rick took a series of deep breaths as he sat across the street from Nathan’s apartment. Tonight had been the first time he had to fight the urge to run up the apartment’s steps, kick the door in, and beat the ever-loving shit out of her new boytoy. Maybe her, too. No, that was certainly not the way to handle things, to let his rage take over. He liked to think that he was disciplined and strategic. His anger had taken away the first love of his life, the military. He didn’t want to admit it, but it had also taken Jessica away.

He couldn’t help but look up at the fourth-floor window, where a dim lamp casted shadows against the walls. He’d seen them practically run up the stairs, Jessica holding her duffel bag. Rick hadn’t been able to see what happened next, but he’d certainly heard it. The older building’s top-hung front window had been left open, letting Jessica’s screams fill the air. He’d bitten down until he tasted blood, burying his head in his hands.

It had been a wise decision to leave the rental showing early. He’d waited until the trio went inside, and then hightailed back to Nathan’s apartment. After retrieving a high-visibility vest and clipboard from the Jeep, he’d walked around the maintenance shed at the back of the property. Luckily it had been unlocked, giving him access to a fifteen-foot ladder and some rusted tools.

He’d climbed the ladder and entered the apartment without a problem or question from neighbors. Rick wasn’t exactly sure what he’d been looking for. Information, he supposed. Information as to what kind of guy Jessica had left Chicago in such a hurry to be with. He wanted to see what was so special.

Rick hadn’t found much. Some paystubs from Rosefield State, showing that he’d worked in the physics department as an IT Analyst, whatever that meant. Otherwise the man had come off as boring. Books, photo albums full of pictures with another woman.
